Frequently Asked Questions

What is the eligibility for SSC CGL 2026?
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in any stream from a recognised university or institution. Age limit is 18–32 years for General category, 18–35 years for OBC (3-year relaxation), and 18–37 years for SC/ST (5-year relaxation). Some posts have specific requirements — for example, Statistical Investigator requires a degree with Statistics as a subject, and Junior Accountant requires Commerce degree or equivalent.
Is there negative marking in SSC CGL and how should I manage it?
Yes. Tier 1 has a deduction of 0.50 marks (half a mark) per wrong answer, and Tier 2 has a deduction of 1 mark per wrong answer. Strategy: in Tier 1, attempt a question if you can eliminate at least 2 wrong options (probability >50%). In Tier 2, only attempt questions you are fairly confident about. Never leave a question blank if you are 60%+ sure. Unattempted questions have zero penalty.
How many attempts are allowed for SSC CGL?
SSC CGL has no fixed limit on the number of attempts. You can appear as many times as you want as long as you are within the prescribed age limit. For General category, the upper age limit is 32 years for most posts. This means a candidate who starts at age 21 can potentially attempt SSC CGL up to 11 times, making it one of the most accessible government exams in terms of attempt flexibility.
Is there an interview round in SSC CGL 2026?
No. SSC CGL does not have an interview or personality test round. The interview was abolished effective from 2016 onwards as part of the government's transparency initiative. The entire selection is now based on Tier 1 (qualifying/screening) and Tier 2 (merit) performance only. Document verification is done after the merit list, but there is no marks-based interview. This makes SSC CGL one of the fairer government exams where coaching background does not influence selection.
