Key Strategy Tips for SSC CGL 2026
- GK is the Quickest Section to Score: In Tier 1, GK questions take only 20–30 seconds each. A strong GK score (18–22/25) makes a huge difference. Prioritise Lucent GK + monthly current affairs PDF for the last 6 months.
- English Grammar is Highly Predictable: SSC CGL repeats certain grammar topics — Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, Idioms & Phrases, and One Word Substitution. Master these 4 topics and score 20+ in English consistently.
- Negative Marking Discipline: Do not guess randomly. In Tier 1 (0.5 negative marking), even wrong guesses hurt less than in Tier 2 (1 mark negative). Skip questions where you have absolutely no idea. Never leave a question you are 60%+ sure about.
- Speed Matters More Than Accuracy Alone: 60 minutes for 100 questions = 36 seconds per question. Practice under strict time pressure. Use shortcuts for Maths — learn Vedic Maths tricks for percentages, squares, and multiplication.
- Tier 2 Maths is the Real Battle: The Mathematical Abilities module in Tier 2 is where most candidates lose marks. Focus heavily on Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration, and Data Interpretation — these carry the most weight and are the most difficult.
- Previous Papers over New Study Material: After Month 4, stop studying new books. Revise what you know and focus on solving previous year papers. SSC CGL repeats questions and patterns heavily — recognising them saves critical time in the exam.
- Attempt Order Strategy: In Tier 1, start with GK (fastest), then English, then Reasoning, and finally Maths. This maximises your accuracy on easier sections first and leaves time for Maths at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the eligibility for SSC CGL 2026?
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in any stream from a recognised university or institution. Age limit is 18–32 years for General category, 18–35 years for OBC (3-year relaxation), and 18–37 years for SC/ST (5-year relaxation). Some posts have specific requirements — for example, Statistical Investigator requires a degree with Statistics as a subject, and Junior Accountant requires Commerce degree or equivalent.
Is there negative marking in SSC CGL and how should I manage it?
Yes. Tier 1 has a deduction of 0.50 marks (half a mark) per wrong answer, and Tier 2 has a deduction of 1 mark per wrong answer. Strategy: in Tier 1, attempt a question if you can eliminate at least 2 wrong options (probability >50%). In Tier 2, only attempt questions you are fairly confident about. Never leave a question blank if you are 60%+ sure. Unattempted questions have zero penalty.
How many attempts are allowed for SSC CGL?
SSC CGL has no fixed limit on the number of attempts. You can appear as many times as you want as long as you are within the prescribed age limit. For General category, the upper age limit is 32 years for most posts. This means a candidate who starts at age 21 can potentially attempt SSC CGL up to 11 times, making it one of the most accessible government exams in terms of attempt flexibility.
Is there an interview round in SSC CGL 2026?
No. SSC CGL does not have an interview or personality test round. The interview was abolished effective from 2016 onwards as part of the government's transparency initiative. The entire selection is now based on Tier 1 (qualifying/screening) and Tier 2 (merit) performance only. Document verification is done after the merit list, but there is no marks-based interview. This makes SSC CGL one of the fairer government exams where coaching background does not influence selection.
