What is a Step-Up SIP?+
A Step-Up SIP (also called Top-Up SIP or Booster SIP) is a SIP where you increase your monthly investment amount by a fixed percentage or amount every year. For example, starting ₹5,000/month and increasing by 10% annually: Year 1 = ₹5,000, Year 2 = ₹5,500, Year 3 = ₹6,050, and so on. It aligns your investments with expected salary growth over time.
How much more wealth does a step-up SIP create vs regular SIP?+
A 10% annual step-up can create significantly more wealth. Example: ₹10,000 monthly SIP at 12% return for 15 years: Regular SIP = ₹50.1 lakh maturity, ₹18L invested. Step-Up SIP (10% annual increase) = ₹1.14 crore maturity, ₹38.1L invested. Step-up creates 2.3× more wealth vs regular SIP, though you invest 2.1× more. The key is that later installments (larger amounts) have less time to compound.
What is the ideal step-up percentage for SIP?+
Financial planners recommend aligning step-up with your annual salary hike, typically 8-15%. A 10% annual step-up is most common. If you receive a 10% hike annually, increasing SIP by 10% ensures you invest a fixed percentage of your income. Even a modest 5% annual step-up substantially improves long-term corpus compared to flat SIP.
Can I change the step-up percentage mid-way in SIP?+
Yes, most fund houses and SIP platforms (Groww, Zerodha Coin, Paytm Money, etc.) allow you to modify or cancel your step-up instruction at any time. You can increase or decrease the step-up percentage, pause the annual increase, or convert a step-up SIP to a regular SIP. Contact your AMC or use the app to make changes before the next step-up date.
